The ski resorts of Boone, North Carolina opened this weekend and many of them have saw natural snow on Saturday, December 5th. If you are looking to get some early season skiing in then you might want to call ahead to some of the Boone ski resorts. Sugar Mountain opened on Black Friday while the rest of the resorts opened this weekend. It might be a wise decision to try and get some skiing in before the kids get out of school; you will probably be able to avoid the crowd.

There are many places to stay in and around Boone. By checking VRBO.com you are likely to find several cabin rentals for a discounted rate this time of year. Make sure to check in the areas of Blowing Rock, Jefferson and Fleetwood as well. The snow looks to be gone for a few days so a middle of the week trip could be just what the doctor ordered if you have a few vacation or “sick” days available.

The first weekend of December has brought snow to the mountains of North Carolina and Virginia. Some areas received as much as six inches and the snow continues to fall late into Saturday evening. Many ski resorts in the area have already opened and you can expect to see many more open if the snow continues to fall throughout the weekend. The weather outlook calls for more snow so getting an early season skiing trip in is a possibility for many tourists.

If skiing is not your interest there are many other outdoor opportunities in the mountains of North Carolina and Virginia. At the present time you could see some of very amazing snow capped mountain views. The roads might not be in great shape after the snowfall but if you have a four wheel drive vehicle then you should have no problem accessing some of the more populated outdoor areas. Make sure to call ahead if you plan on taking any roads that are in the more remote parts of the mountain regions.

If the snow continues you can expect that the Blue Ridge Parkway will be closed in the higher elevation areas. If you hope to drive this scenic road you will definitely want to check ahead because there are often many sections of this parkway that closes when winter weather hits the area. For more information on the Blue Ridge Parkway make sure to check out this link. Some of the views on this parkway cold be absolutely amazing if you get to see the snow capped mountains.

The weekend of December 5th and 6th could bring winter weather to the mountains of North Carolina and Virginia. There is a 90% chance of precipitation in most areas of the mountain region and temperatures are expected to get very close to freezing. It is likely that the precipitation will be in the form of rain during the day but do not be surprised to see snowfall during the nights and evenings in the mountains.

Several ski resorts are opening this weekend in the southern mountain region and natural snow will only help the cause. There has been an excessive amount of rainfall in much of the region over the fall months so a snowstorm is not going to help the fishing, mountain biking or hiking trails. In an area that was once concerned with draught conditions there are now concerns about getting too much rain in too short of a period of time. Many rivers have been releasing water to levels that have not been seen in years.

If you plan on visiting the mountains of North Carolina or Virginia this weekend make sure to check the forecast. It might be a good idea to bring along some warm clothes and ski equipment as winter weather is a possibility. Many ski resorts in the region have predicted this to be one of the longest ski seasons in almost a decade so make sure to take advantage of this opportunity.

North Carolina Mountain Ski Resorts are starting to open in Early December. On Black Friday, Sugar Mountain Ski Resort near Banner Elk and Cataloochee Ski Area near Maggie Valley opened. So far in the season all of the snow has been man made and all of the slopes are not open. The mountains of North Carolina are expected to receive snow the first weekend in December so more slopes are likely to open as natural snow will cover the ground.

For Sugar Mountain this is the earliest opening since 2001. Several North Carolina ski resorts are predicting this to be the longest ski season we have seen in almost a decade. Most resorts in the Southeast are scheduled to open in early to mid December and do not be surprised if many of the North Carolina ski resorts open this weekend if there is a significant amount of snowfall.

Snowshoe Mountain in West Virginia and Camelback in Pennsylvania are scheduled to open on December 4th. If you have been looking to get back out on the mountains and get some skiing in you might want to check out one of these four ski resorts before doing research on any other resort that could be opening in the coming weeks. If the temperatures in the mountains of North Carolina continues to decrease then snow skiing will be open full throttle by the middle of December.
